HVAC Ownership Weekly #15
Check your thermostat schedule
A short checklist for Utah homeowners: review the schedule, check equipment guidance, and note comfort questions before changing more settings.
A new routine is a useful reason to review the schedule already programmed into your thermostat. Start with when people are home, then check the guidance for your equipment before changing settings.
Start with the week you actually have
If your household routine has changed, compare the thermostat schedule with when people are home. ENERGY STAR includes thermostat settings in its maintenance checklist, with comfort at home and energy use while away in mind. Write down weekday and weekend arrival and departure times before changing the program. The goal is a schedule that fits your household, not a universal temperature target.
Check the controls before changing the numbers
Review the displayed time, the programmed periods, and any hold or override using your thermostat manual. Enbridge advises checking that a thermostat is compatible with the HVAC system and installed correctly; Rocky Mountain Power includes programmable thermostat use in its cooling guidance. For a heat pump or unfamiliar controls, ask which settings suit the equipment before adopting a different heating schedule. Leave wiring and installer settings to a qualified technician.
Bring one clear question to a maintenance visit
Keep a short note of the settings you used, when a room felt uncomfortable, and whether the problem repeated. If you keep overriding the schedule or comfort remains uneven, ask Air Design whether the settings need review and whether a maintenance visit or separate diagnosis fits the concern. A plan can provide a recurring occasion to ask these questions, but changing a schedule or buying maintenance does not guarantee lower bills or prevent every failure.
